Mithril dragons are the most powerful dragons, toppling the
King Black Dragon's long standing record as the strongest dragon in
Gielinor. They are found in the
Ancient Cavern and are commonly killed for their rare drops, including the
Dragon full helm and
Draconic visage. They are also the only monsters to drop
chewed bones which can be burnt on a pyre ship with the chance of recieving rare items, such as a
Dragon full helm.
Mithril dragons attack with all three attack styles as well as dragonfire so an Anti-dragon shield, Dragonfire shield, or Super antifires are strongly recommended. Mithril dragons are assigned by Duradel/Lapalok and Kuradal. Duradel/Lapalok assigns 4-11 of them while Kuradal assigns 20-35 of them, making them a fast task even with their high defence.
Combat Methods
The combat method used for fighting these foes varies but mainly consists of Magic or Ranged. They can also be fought using Melee providing you are a reasonably high level (125+).
Ranged Gear: Most tend to use either Black Dragonhide or Karil's armour, Rune crossbow, Anti-dragon/Dragonfire shield or the Unholy Book of Zamorak so long as they are able to use Super antifire potions.
Magic Gear: Ganodermic poncho, Ahrims Robes, Dagon'hai robes, Staff of Light, Polypore Staff or preferred Elemental Battle staff (Air or Fire are common), Infinity boots and either the Anti Shields or the Mages' book.
Melee Gear: The Melee gear varies quite significantly, some tend to use the Verac set as it has the ability to hit through high defence but most use the Chaotic Rapier/Abyssal Whip along side the Dragonfire Shield. Torags and Karils can also be used provided you use the appropriate Protection Prayers.
A popular method of melee attack for those who do not have access to a chaotic rapier is by using a zamorakian spear. However this method does require Super antifires. To use this method it is recommended you use a healing familiar such as a unicorn and either activate the Protect from Melee / Deflect Melee prayers, as well as Turmoil or Piety. Players may always wish to bring a weapon suited to special attacks such as Dragon claws or Korasi's sword. In fact some players opt to bring several Recover special potions to use the special moves repeatedly. With the inventory below and using both the Deflect Melee prayer and Turmoil it is possible to get 35+ kills per trip.
Inventory Setup
What follows is a sample inventory setup for fighting Mithril dragons. The Extreme sets could be replaced by Overloads and Saradomin brews for the less cash concerned player. This also provides more space and may extend the trip. With 3 overloads it is quite easy to kill 50+ a trip. Please also note that unless you are using a Ferocious ring's teleport or the Fairy ring the unicorn must be spawned inside the ancient cavern - you cannot jump through the whirlpool with the unicorn summoned.
