Music Track Interface

Accessed from the main menu in the bottom-right of your game interface via the music control1a.png button, the music player interface allows you to see all of the music tracks available in RuneScape and play the ones you have unlocked.

The interface itself has a menu at the top, shows you the total number of tracks in game and how many you have unlocked, displays the currently playing track below the menu (in this case, "Venture"), and lists all of the music tracks in game by name.

The menu buttons at the top of the interface allow you to perform the following actions:

access playlist.jpg Access the playlist interface by clicking this button.
search for a song.jpg Search through all tracks by clicking on the button with the magnifying glass icon, then typing in a word from the track you are searching for. As you type, your search results will update in the music interface.
shuffle on.jpgshuffle off.jpg Clicking this button will randomise the play order of your unlocked tracks. This will override the area music so your tracks will not change until they are finished, or skipped, even if you enter a new area. If you have shuffle activated, the icon will have an orange border.
skip song.jpg cannot skip song.jpg If you don't want to listen to the current track, pressing this button will skip it and load the next track that is queued for you. If you have no queued songs, the icon will be dull to indicate there are no songs to skip.

To play a music track, you can click on one of the songs in the list of music tracks. Green tracks are songs that have been unlocked and can be played by left-clicking on them. For example, in the image, the track "Chaotic Cookery" is available for you to listen to. Red tracks have not been unlocked yet, and can be unlocked by completing the related quests or finding the relevant area. To find out how to unlock a music track, right-click it and select 'Unlock hint'.

Songs that are appropriate to your location will start when you enter a certain area, unless you have a playlist playing, or have activated the shuffle feature.

The green 'plus' or red 'minus' icons that appear next to tracks add to or remove that particular song from your playlist (see below).

Playlist Interface

Each unlocked track in your music list has a plus or minus sign to the left of its name (in the image above, 'Citadel Theme' has a plus sign). By clicking a plus sign, you add the related track to your playlist, and by pressing the minus sign you remove it from your playlist. To view what is currently on your playlist, click the access playlist.jpg button in your music controls interface.

Your playlist features all songs that have been selected and added from the full music list.

The playlist screen has four buttons running across the top, to the left of the number of unlocked tracks.

playlist on.jpg access playlist.jpg This button turns your playlist on and off (when off, music will play as normal from your full music list; when on (indicated by an orange border), your playlist will play and then loop back to the beginning).
clear playlist.jpg The dustbin button clears all tracks from your playlist.
shuffle on.jpg shuffle off.jpg This button shuffles through your playlist of tracks in a randomised order (turning this off will play the tracks in the order listed).

You can click on the red 'minus' button by a song in this screen to remove it from your playlist.

History

music control1a.gif

Music forms a core part of the Audio in RuneScape. Developed by the Audio Team the sound in RuneScape has evolved considerably from it's early days in RuneScape Classic. Initial sound effects were based on using simplistic foley effects to represents the expected sound.

Music first used MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) sounds - a process of synthesising tracks. More recently they have switched to the Ogg format which allows actual record of live performances. Examples of newer tracks which include such techniques are found in the new fully voiced quest One Piercing Note.

Miscellaneous

  • Those adventurers who especially enjoy exploring may find that they manage to unlock 500 music tracks. When they reach this, they will also unlock a new emote - 'Air guitar'.
