You can download it from the Apple App store or Google Play store or just bookmark the web address to stay in contact with your RuneScape friends while on the go. You can access the Grand Exchange, D&D Tracker Friends Chat, Clan Chat and Private Messages to and from the game.
Firstly, you'll need to go to the app itself. This can be found on the RuneScape website, the App store and the Google Play store. You'll then need to login with a Jagex account (Facebook logins unfortunately do not work).
Having successfully logged in, you'll be greeted with the menu. Here you'll have several options: Grand Exchange checker, bank, stock market, chat, D&D tracker, friends list, clan members and settings.
If you have friends or clan members online, or if you have any completed transactions on the GE, you'll see a green number on these menu buttons indicating this. So, in the image to the right, two transactions are awaiting you in your collection box, and one friend is online.
The Grand Exchange allows you the ability to view your in-game Grand Exchange usage. This includes items that you have placed a bid on, or items that you are are selling along with the progress of those sales. You can also buy and sell items through the companion.
When you click on the Grand Exchange link, you'll see your 6 GE slots from in the game. If you haven't filled a slot you will have the option to buy or sell an item. If you have a filled slot, it will list:
- the item name and image
- the price you selected
- whether you are buying/selling
- how much you are willing to pay/accept
- whether or not the transaction has completed or been cancelled
Buying and Selling
Before you can start to buy or sell via the Companion, you'll need to have the RuneScape Authenticator activated on your account. Once you have this, buying and selling items from your inventory is simple.
If you have a Bank PIN activated, you will be asked to enter this when buying or selling items.
Load the Grand Exchange and click the 'Buy' button on one of your empty slots. This will bring up the search feature (see the bank section below for how to find an item) and a list of your previous transactions.
Type in the quantity that you want to buy/sell, or press the three buttons below the price. These will either set the price to be 5% less than the market price, the market price or 5% more than the market price.
When you are happy with the price, press 'Confirm offer' to put your request into the Grand Exchange.
Selling works in a similar manner.
Checking the Status of your Items
Viewing your Grand Exchange slots is easy when using the Companion. Blue highlights will be applied to slots where items are being bought. Items being sold will have orange highlights.
If a transaction has been cancelled, it will be marked with a red cancelled icon . If the transaction has been completed, it will be marked with a green completed icon . In both these cases, you'll need to collect the items and/or coins from the Grand Exchange within the game before you are able to use that slot again. Ongoing transactions will not have an icon.
Clicking on any of the slots, with the exception of blank slots, will bring up more details about the transaction. Here you'll be able to see:
- the item name, image and its description
- how many you are buying/selling
- what price the item usually goes for
- what price you are paying/asking for
- how many items you want to buy/sell and how many have been bought/sold already
- how much you have spent/will get in total when the transaction completes
The Bank section lets you view the items you have stored in your bank.
At the top of the page you'll see a search box, allowing you to look through your bank to find specific items that match the terms you've entered.
Below the search bar you'll see how many bank slots you have in total, and how many you've used.
The main area of this section of the companion shows your items. As with your in-game bank, you'll see all of the items in tab 1 (or all of your items if you aren't using multiple tabs). You can select your other tabs, which are named by the item used as the tab's icon, from the drop down box at the bottom of the page.
Clicking on an item will bring up details about it in the area at the bottom of the companion. Items that can be sold on the Grand Exchange will have their price listed and a graph button that can be clicked on to take you to that item in the Stockmarket part of the companion.
The Stock Market lets you look up the price of items on The Grand Exchange. Simply search for your desired item using the search bar at the top of the page. Partial search terms work, but only full words. So, as in the image to the left, 'seismic' would work, but 'seis' would not.
The search results page will show you all items that have matched your query, how much they are currently selling for and how much their price has changed from yesterday.
Clicking on an item will load the historical data for that item, allowing you to view how it has performed in the past. You'll see the item's name and description, a guide price and the change in price since yesterday.
You'll also be able to see graphs for the item's performance over the past month, three months and six months. Clicking on these time frames will change the graph to show you the requested data. The graphs show the daily average and monthly average over the chosen time period.
This section is where you'll spend the most time on the web app if you're looking to talk to other players. Along the top of this section you'll have a link to return to the menu on the left, and a link to go to your settings on the right.
Below the menu and settings buttons are four tabs, one for each chat channel that you can view. To navigate between the chat channels click the chat icon. Players who have mobile devices with touch screens can swipe left or right to move between channels.
The rest of the chat screen will vary depending on which channel you have open.
The all chat channel will show all messages in the lobby, your private chat, and the friends/clan channels that you are in. You will not be able to type messages in this channel - it would normally go to the local chat if you were in game but this is not possible in the web app - but you can send private messages from here.
Your messages will be shown on the right of the app, messages from other players will show on the left of the screen. Next to each player's message you will see their avatar (if they have one set) and their name. The channel name and the channel type will also show.
The very bottom of the all chat screen has a button on the left to see who is in the channel, and a button on the right to add a player to your friends list.
The private chat channel will show all messages that you have sent to individual players, or that have been sent to you directly.
Your messages will be shown on the right of the app, messages from other players will show on the left of the screen. Next to each player's message you will see their avatar (if they have one set) and their name. The channel type will also show but this is more useful in the All channel.
The very bottom of the private chat screen has a button to load your friends list.
The friends chat channel will show all messages in the current friends channel that you are in. If you are not in a friends channel you will be asked to enter the name of the player who owns the channel you want to chat in.

Next to each player's message you will see their avatar (if they have one set) and their name. The channel name and the channel type will also show but this is more useful in the All channel.
The very bottom of the friends chat screen has a button on the left to change which friends chat you are in, and a button on the right to see who is in the friends chat.
The clan chat channel will show all messages in the current clan channel that you are in. If you are not in a clan channel you will be asked to enter the name of the clan whose channel you want to chat in.

Next to each player's message you will see their avatar (if they have one set) and their name. The clan name and the channel type will also show but this is more useful in the All channel.
The very bottom of the clan chat screen has a button on the left to change which clan chat you are in, and a button on the right to see who is in the clan chat.
The D&D Tracker allows you the ability to view a list of the Distractions & Diversions and see how long it is until you can take part in them. The D&D Tracker also lets you see if you've completed that D&D, or still have some of it left to take part in this period.
When you access the D&D Tracker from the Companion menu, you will see all of the D&Ds listed. Below the D&D name you will see either how long the event will remain active for, how long until the next event, or if the event is ready or nearly ready. For some D&Ds their availability depends on the world that they are running on and so they will not have these messages.
To the right of all the D&Ds you'll find an icon that also indicates their readiness. D&Ds that are nearly ready to play will have a nearly ready icon, D&Ds that are ready to play will show a ready icon, and D&Ds that have already been completed this period will show a completed icon.
If you click on any of the D&Ds you will see more information about that particular D&D. This includes:
- The status of the D&D - if you can play, how long it has left this time period, or when the next reset is
- A brief description of the D&D
- Details on what it provides as a reward
- A description of any requirements that need to be met in order to take part
- Your progress in the D&D this time period
The Companion's friends list is linked to your friends and ignore lists from the game. To navigate between the lists click the icons. Players who have mobile devices with touch screens can swipe left or right to move between lists.
Next to each player's name you will see their avatar (if they have one set) and their rank in your friends chat (if applicable). Their online status and world number will also show.
The very bottom of the friends list screen has a button to add a player to your friends or ignore list.
The Companion's clan members list is linked to your clan lists from the game.

This area of the Companion allows you to set various chat and privacy permissions.
All permissions are grouped by the part of the web app that they are relevant to. As the profanity filter and online status apply to all areas, these are listed separately.
Simply click the section titles (grey bars) to show the options in that section. From here you can either: click the toggle buttons to turn an option on or off; or click to choose one of the multiple settings available.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the RuneScape Companion?
The RuneScape Companion is a new web app that allows you to stay connected to RuneScape from anywhere. At the moment it allows you to chat to your friends who are in game, but we plan on adding many more features!
The web app means that, for the first time, you’re able to use your mobile phone or your tablet to chat your friends and clan mates when you are not playing using the RuneScape chat channels.
2. What is a Web App?
The RuneScape Companion is called a web app because you can use it on your mobile device either as a standalone app or as an application that is delivered via a web page, so you can use your browser (in this instance Chrome or Safari) to load it up.
3. So if I use the web app I can talk to people while they’re playing the game?
Yes, and vice versa. It’s best to think of the web app as a new version of the lobby that is accessible in your browser without the need to load the game.
4. Who can use the RuneScape Companion?
It is free to use for all RuneScape players on any of the devices listed below. You will need to log in with a Jagex account to access the web app.
5. What are the web app’s main features?
The Companion App lets you access many essential RuneScape features while you’re out and about:
- Friends Chat
- Clan Chat
- Private Messages
- Grand Exchange
- D&D Tracker
6. How do I change chat channels?
You can swap to a different chat channel (All Chat, Private Chat, Friends Chat & Clan Chat) by pressing the icons at the top of the screen, or, by swiping left & right for devices with touch screens.
7. How do I send messages in All Chat?
You can only reply to messages in All Chat. To do so, just press a message you have received then you’ll be able to type a reply.
8. How do I start a private conversation?
To send a private message to a friend, goto your Friends List and press on their name and select ‘Message’. Alternatively, you can press on private messages you have received to be able to quickly send replies.
9. How do I add someone to my Friends List?
Pressing on someone’s avatar will show several options including the one to add that person to your friends list. Alternatively, there is an option to type in a name manually on the friends list screen.
10. How do I report someone?
To report someone, press on their avatar and then press the ‘Report’ option. You’ll then be able to select the reason for reporting them, just like you would in the game.
11. Can I be logged into the game at the same time as the web app?
No, you can only be logged into one or the other.
12. What devices are supported by the web app?
The RuneScape Companion runs using a custom version of our HTML5 engine so is best support by more powerful, modern devices. At the moment we know that the web app works on the following devices:
- Desktop PCs and Laptops using Chrome
- Android devices with 1GB RAM or more in Chrome, such as:
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 7
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- HTC 1X+
- iOS devices with 1GB RAM in Safari, these are:
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 4s
- iPad Mini
- iPad Mini retina
- iPad 3rd Gen
- iPad 4th Gen
The web app currently does not work on the following devices:
- iPad Air
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 3
- Windows Phones
- Blackberry Phones
Some older versions of these devices (along with other Android devices in general) may work, but may be prone to crashes and performance issues. Any Android device with less than 1GB of RAM is unlikely to work.
13. My phone or tablet isn’t currently supported. What can I do?
We will continue to update and improve the web app so it may be that it will work on your device in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!
14. How do I use it?
Simply go to this address www.runescape.com/companion and login with your normal RuneScape account.
15. It doesn’t seem to work on my Android phone even though you say it supports that model!
Make sure you are using Chrome as the default browser in Android phones doesn’t support the RuneScape Companion.
16. Can I download it from the App Store or Google Play?
17. I normally login with my Facebook account, how can I log into the web app?
At the moment the web app doesn't support logins using Facebook accounts. You will need to convert your Facebook account to a Jagex one by adding an e-mail address and password. To do this go to the account settings page on the RuneScape website.
18. I get asked to extend memory usage on my iPhone. What does that mean?
The web app will store some data on your device's local storage to help the web app run faster, so it relates to storage space rather than a data download. Extending memory will help with boot-up times in particular, and most of the space requested will be redundant; even if it asks for 25mb it will be storing only a fraction of that (probably closer to 1mb).
19. Are there any more features coming to the web app?
Yes. We are always looking to add features to create the best experience possible for our players!
20. Does the web app support Quick Chat?
Not at the present time. Quick Chat users are unable to send messages, and messages received in Quick Chat are not currently visible.
21. I’m using the web app in Chrome or Safari but it still doesn’t work!
This could be due to a variety of reasons. Firstly, check to see if the device you’re using is in our supported device list. If it is then try clearing your browser’s cache and then reloading the page.
