The runite crossbow has been a longstanding part of the Ranged arsenal since it's release. Previously the the primary weapon of choice for rangers, since the introduction of the Chaotic, Dragon and Royal crossbows as well as the changes (including removing it's ability to fire enchanted bolts) resulting from the Evolution of Combat it's status has diminished somewhat.

It is however still a useful weapon, being fairly easy to obtain and possible to wield alongside a shield (often the Ranged version of the Dragonfire shield).
