Security Tips

Game-Guide-Manflipped.png

We have taken a lot of time and effort in ensuring that the RuneScape.com website (and all Jagex sites) are as safe and secure as possible. We pride ourselves on having some of the finest intrusion counter-measures around and in keeping your information and accounts guarded from 'hackers'/security breaches. However keeping your account safe is something that involves you working with us and making sure that the information you need to enter the site is not made available to anyone else. We compare it to a real world door: we will provide you with the best lock for it that we can, however this won't stop the door being opened if you don't do your part in keeping the key safe & sound.

We have provided full instructions on how to keep your password safe & secure in the Computer Security & Basic Account Security guides. To further help, and to show how the two go together, we give you this seven step guide to total account security. Use these are part of your day to day computer use and your account will stay safe for all your time with RuneScape.

If you have any questions about any of the tips listed below then please contact us either on the Account Help Forum or by emailing us. If things do go wrong & someone else manages to get on your account then we have a guide for you here.

Keep you personal information safe

There’s no reason another player needs to know your:

  • Password
  • Security Questions
  • Real name
  • Email address (and the password for your email)
  • Credit-card details
  • Personally identifiable information

Keep your password secure

Be imaginative when you first create your password. In addition, it increases your security if you use a different password for your RuneScape account to those you use on other websites.

Keep your computer secure

Make sure that your computer has security software installed and that you regularly update it, as well as run full scans on for hidden problems. Avoid using computers other than your own if you are not sure how safe/free from spyware they are.

Watch out for fake/phishing websites

Some people create fake RuneScape websites that look almost identical to the official RuneScape site in order to try and trick you into giving them your username and password. In order to avoid being a victim of these phishing sites, remember:

  • There are no cheats for RuneScape. Any sites that claim they have cheats are trying to scam your password.
  • Jagex doesn’t recruit Mods or admins through other websites. Any websites making these claims are fake.
  • Jagex will not email you to advise you "Your account has received an infraction"
  • RuneScape chat boards/rooms – Make sure you use a different username and password so the chat room owners don’t get your RuneScape password. If they say you need to use your game password, then you know they’re cheats.
  • RuneScape test servers – Only login at www.runescape.com
  • If it looks too good to be true....it usually is!

Avoid unofficial RuneScape add-ons.

Any official add-ons can be found on our website. There are others who claim their programs give you an advantage over other players, but in reality all they do is either take the fun out of RuneScape or record your password. Some of these malicious programs can also contain viruses and key-loggers which can obviously harm your computer. If you want to remain secure, only install add-ons from the official RuneScape website.

Watch out for fake emails, and fake Jagex staff

Cheats might fake emails or claim to be official Jagex staff able to offer you items or mod status. This is normally just so that they can get you to provide you with your password. You can always tell if people are Jagex Moderators from their gold crown in-game – don’t believe anyone who claims they’re a mod unless they have a gold crown in-game. Remember, Jagex will NEVER ask you for your password.

Anything to do with a Moderator application will always be sent to your message inbox. That way you know it’s from us. We will never have any need for you to provide us with your password, for anything. Any email or player that asks you for it, isn’t us.

Only play on accounts that you have created

We will always look to return an account to the original owner. The only way to make sure you keep an account is to not share it with anyone else. If you share an account, you may end up putting in lots of time and effort that you could lose in the future. If you buy an account it is likely that the seller will reclaim from you and then sell it onto someone else, just to do the same again.
