Introduction

Just as you keep pets in your home, you can keep these fluffy (or not so, in some cases) companions in RuneScape too.

The majority of pets are gained through the Summoning skill which, aside from granting you the ability to call upon strange beings from another realm, also enables you to form close bonds with a number of animals native to Gielinor. These range from dogs and geckos right up to baby dragons! As your Summoning level increases, you will find yourself able to care for a larger range of pets.

Pets can also be granted through completing quests and other activities in game, or purchased through Solomon's General Store.

There are three types of pets:

  • Companion - These pets do not speak to you, or grow but they can perform emotes and they can be renamed. They can be earned in game through quests, or can be purchased on Solomon's General Store. (For a list of companion pets, see below)
  • Follower - These pets are those that you gain access to through the Summoning skill and some quests or seasonal events. Most of them will talk to you. (For a list of follower pets, see below)
  • Legendary - These pets are the most advanced. They can grow, their colouring can be changed, they can be renamed, they perform special moves and they can perform emotes. You can also purchase special treats for them from Solomon's General Store that will enable them to grow much quicker. Legendary pets are either free gifts with membership purchases, or can be bought on Solomon's General Store. (For a list of legendary pets, see below)

Pets can be viewed and managed from the pets tab of the pet management interface. You will be able to rename, recolour or select the appearance of your pet from here. You can also view their progress for legendary pets, or place the pet in the Menagerie of your Player-Owned House. Note that not all of the features displayed in the interface are available for all pets.

Companion Pets

Companion pets are the most basic of pets. They do not grow, and will not speak to you as other pets often do, but they do look good and can perform a unique emote. Most companion pets are purchased from Solomon's General Store.

Follower Pets

Follower pets are given to you as quest rewards, during seasonal events, found as you level up your Summoning skill and purchased from Solomon's General Store.

pet interface1d.jpg
Pet interface

When you have your pet out and following you, you will be able to right-click the Summoning icon next to the minimap and select 'Follower details' to see how your pet is getting along.

Like the interface for keeping track of your familiars, there are a couple of useful bits of information available.

The 'feeding dish' icon shows your pet's hunger. The higher the number, the more they need to eat. Your pet won't run away if you don't feed it, but it's cruel to not feed your pet so remember to keep some snacks on you! You can find out what your pet likes to eat by reading below.

The other icon, showing an adult bulldog and a bulldog puppy, shows how far your pet is towards being fully grown. Most pets go from being puppies/chicks/etc. to an adult state, but the Guthix raptor, Saradomin owl and Zamorak hawk all have an intermediate stage.

Unlike familiars, you do not have to have your pets out, instead they will snooze happily in your backpack or bank until you decide to bring them out again. Each type of pet has different needs, of course, so you should examine the tables below carefully to make sure your pet doesn't tire of you and run away.

You can only have one of each type of pet at one time (unless you have a menagerie in your player-owned house); so, if you have a monkey you cannot trap another one. You can only have one follower (pet or familiar) out at a time.

Some pets will take an extraordinarily long time to mature, and most will only eat specific food. In most cases, you should be able to purchase the food you need from a pet shop.

If you find yourself in possession of an egg, you will need to use an incubator to make it hatch. You can find an incubator in any of the pet shops. After a short period of time you will be able to go back to the incubator to collect your new pet.

Note: The pets caught using the Hunter skill are the baby versions - you cannot catch an adult monkey to have as a pet, for instance.

Legendary Pets

Legendary pets are available for purchase from Solomon's General Store, or as free items awarded with promotional membership payments.

Legendary pets start out as babies, grow into adolescents, then finally become adults. They grow up gradually, but the more attention you give them, the faster they grow. You can give them attention by:

  • Having your pet follow you.
  • Interacting with your pet, such as by asking them for one of their emotes, at least once every 30 minutes.

Pets gain Pet Points - the pet equivalent of XP - even when they are not being interacted with, including when you have logged out.

If you want to see your pet grow up faster, Solomon has a range of pet treats available to boost the progress of your active pet, or even to grow a pet into the next category immediately.

As they grow, pets learn new abilities and change in appearance. You can change your pet's appearance to a previous version if you prefer, but you cannot change to a stage that your pet has yet to reach (so you cannot choose the adult appearance if your pet has only grown to adolescence). Note this is just the physical appearance of your pet, it does not change the skills it has learnt.

Ability Description
Forage
Forage &
Pets occasionally locate items. These items are chosen randomly from a list. This happens automatically from time to time, although if you ask the pet to forage it’ll have a go with a chance of getting something immediately.
Deposit
Deposit
Once every ten minutes, a adolescent or an adult pet can take a single item to the bank for you. Speak to the pet and you’ll be able to choose which item to deposit using the Pet Banking Service
Deposit
Scavenge
Adult pets will collect items dropped by your foes. You can choose what kinds of things you’re interested in and the pet will frequently check the corpses of your victims for things to bring you. The scavenge option can be customised to work for: coins; metal bars & ore; runes and talismans; herbs and seeds; raw and cooked food; weapons; miscellaneous items; armour; noted items; and items that trigger a loot beam.
