I click ‘Play now’ but nothing happens
Don’t panic! Just follow the steps in this simple guide to fix it...
Instructions For Windows XP
- Restart your computer
- Reinstall Java
- Go to Start > Control panel > Add/Remove programs
- Uninstall all versions of Java
- Remove any item with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Visit the Java website at http://www.java.com
- Click ‘Free Java Download’ button
- If you are running the most up to date version, the website will specify!
- If not, download the latest version
- Install the update
- Once installed, restart your computer
- Update Windows
- Click on Start
- Select 'All Programs'
- Choose 'Update Windows'
- Install all available Windows Updates
- Restart your PC
- Alternatively click here to check for updates.
- Upgrade Internet browser
- Close all other programs - Close any unnecessary software which may be running on your computer. In particular, don't try playing RuneScape at the same time as downloading files or watching Web TV as this doesn't work very well! Many of the programs that we use can be very demanding on your CPU.

- If there is a Mac OS X update available, you can install it. If there is a new version of Java for Mac, it will be included in the Mac OS X update.
- Clearing Jagex cache
- Choose Users>your user name>Library>Caches.
- From the Menu bar, choose Edit>Select All.
- Drag all of the items to the Trash.
- From the Macintosh HD, choose Library>Caches.
- Choose Edit>Select All, and drag the items to the Trash. You’ll be required to type in an administrator’s pass.
- Restart your Mac.
- Then, use spotlight to locate the folders .jagex_cache_32 and/or jagexcache on your computer and delete them.
- Switch from wireless to cable If you use a wireless network, try using a cable instead. The latency caused by wireless networks results in slower internet speed.
- Use a different browser
- There is a vast selection of Internet Browsers to choose from, you don’t always have to use the same one!
- Some popular browsers you could choose from are:
- MOZILLA FIREFOX: http://www.mozilla-europe.org
- GOOGLE CHROME: http://www.google.com/chrome
- OPERA: http://www.opera.com/
- Use the RuneScape Client
- Visit http://www.RuneScape.com
- Hover your mouse pointer over 'Game Info'
- Select 'Downloads' from the drop down menu
- Download the RuneScape Client from this new page

I click ‘Play now’ and the screen goes white
White screen issues are normally the result of a problem with the plug-in that is required to view content, in our case, Java.
NOTE: There are a few alternative ways of updating your version of Java. We are providing Jagex's suggested way of updating Java.

- NOTE: We strongly advise using your manufacturers authorised drivers as opposed to third party drivers.
- To find out your graphics card manufacturer:
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type "DxDiag" (without the quotations) and hit enter
- Click the display tab
- Your graphics card name and model is next to name.
- To Update:
- Visit the website of your graphics card manufacturer
- Visit their download section
- Search for your graphics card model & name
- Download graphics drivers
- Install the new drivers
- Restart your computer
- Clear Jagex cache
- Go to Start > Computer > Local Disk ( C: ) or your primary hard drive.
- Locate the folder named “.jagex_cache_32” and/or “jagexcache”.
- Delete these folders.
- Restart your Internet Browser (e.g. Internet explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc).

The game gets stuck at ‘Checking for updates’

- Internet Dongles
- Using a Dongle can cause issues as some are set to automatically disconnect when they think you are not using the internet.
- When you load RuneScape you are using the internet, but some Dongles do not recognise this and disconnect you, meaning the game stops loading.
- You may be able to get around this if you continue browsing other websites whilst loading to prevent the connection from timing out.
