Wizard Elriss requested the young wizard's presence at the Runecrafting Guild to explain his theories and after failing to discredit Wizard Finix's claims, Wizard Elriss came to the decision that runecrafters should start learning to draw energy out of the world of Gielinor now.
There is one slight problem: the energy in Gielinor has had lots of time to settle making it impossible to use for this purpose. Fortunately, the Runecrafting Guild is situated in another dimension where the energy that makes up the world is in a raw state and has yet to settle.
As a student of runecraft you have been tasked with learning to leech energy from this plane.
To get to the Runespan you will need to use the portal on the roof of the Wizards' Tower. This portal will allow you to travel to the Runecrafting Guild, or (depending on your level) to two locations within the Runespan.
Players with a low Runecrafting level will be able to go to the bottom level of the Runespan whereas those with a higher level can choose to go to the second level. There are three levels in total; levels are traversed via ladders found near the entrance of the Runespan.
To craft runes within the Runespan, you must siphon energy from various sources. There are several ways to obtain the energy; you need:
Note that the Runespan is owned by the Runecrafting Guild and anything you make there will be taken from you when you exit the area. These runes will be converted into points for your service to the Runecrafting Guild which you can then spend at Wizard Fenix's shop.
While in the Runespan, a group of icons will appear at the top left of the screen.
| Icon | Explanation |
|---|---|
| The number next to this shows the total points you have earned from the Runecrafting Guild so far. | |
| The number by this is the points held in your inventory, in the form of runes. | |
| This shows the level you are currently on; a vine for the bottom floor, a chaotic storm for the middle floor, and a skull for the top floor. | |
| When this icon is visible, a Runesphere is present in the Runespan. |
Floating essence is used to get you going in the early areas. It provides the initial essence that you need to start siphoning from the various elemental nodes and elemental creatures found in the Runespan.
Simply click on some Floating essence to siphon its energy into Rune essence. If you already have 25 Rune essence in your inventory, you will not be able to siphon more from the Floating essence.

Runic energy nodes are concentrated essence which you can siphon runic energy from to make runes. Runes spawn randomly, but higher level nodes will spawn as you explore the Runespan. As the distance you travel from the center increases so does the level of nodes you will find; you will find more high level nodes on the furthest corners of runespan.
To siphon a node, simply click it. You will need Rune essence in your inventory to siphon runic energy. Note that you won't always siphon runic energy. Successful siphons will produce a rune whereas unsuccessful attempts will have a chance to gain a small amount of Runecrafting XP.

Runic creatures are beings made of Rune essence that have been bound together with the different types of runic energy. You can either siphon the energy from these creatures, or chip away at them. As with runic energy nodes, siphoning energy requires Rune essence, chipping however, gives Rune essence and requires 10 runes below the creature's level.
You may chip a creature and then siphon the remaining energies if you wish. Note that chipping will "lock" that creature to you - you won't be able to chip it again until you have chipped a further 3 creatures.
To travel between the islands you will need to spend runes to move between "bridging points". The bridges always cost 1 of each rune, but the number of types of rune and the level of the runes required make the bridges harder to get across.
If you have the runes to use a bridging point, the near side will glow (your destination will also glow). To use a bridging point, simply click on it.
The list of bridges in full is below:

On each floor there are 5 runecrafting wizards: 4 in blue robes and 1 in yellow robes. Once you have been in the area for 10 minutes, you will get a message stating that a yellow wizard is stranded. Which of the 5 wizards is yellow is not the same for every player.
Search for the yellow wizard and speak to them. If you spot a blue wizard and speak to them they will help you track down the yellow wizards.
Yellow wizards will ask for a specific rune to help them. You can hand any type of rune to the yellow wizard but will be provided with bonus XP If you give them the rune they are asking for. The XP for runes not specified by the wizard is based on the type of rune and your Runecrafting level. He will take up to 10 of the given rune.
Below level 77 it is best to give the wizard the highest rune you have; regardless of what he asks for. If he happens to ask for the highest rune you have it is more rewarding to give him your second best rune. (This will hopefully be fixed soon)
At level 77+ it is better to give the requested rune because the bonus xp is always larger. If you do not have the runes he asks for, give him the highest runes you have.
You will not be able to hand runes in more than once per 10 minutes.
All of these wizards will happily teleport you back to the Runecrafting Guild entrance if you need to.
Every few hours a ball of rune essence will appear. The Runesphere is very similar to the Shooting Star but instead of layers of rock, there are layers of energy that need to be siphoned off. The Runesphere is up for an hour and it is a race to reach the centre before it disappears.
Think of this ball as a giant gobstopper made out of Rune essence. Each layer is aligned to one of the 14 runic types and has a Runecrafting level requirement on it. The ball starts with the highest level layer and then goes down to the lowest layer.
For each successful siphon you will convert some rune essence into runes and gain a piece of rune dust. You can gain a maximum of 1000 rune dust in a day and can only gain rune dust from one of the runespheres a day. Handing in Rune dust will get you 25 Runecrafting XP per dust.
The amount of experience gained in comparison to the time spent on these elemental shifting spheres is pale in comparison to a majority of the nodes in runespan.
Note that if you logout having started siphoning from a Runesphere, you will no longer be able to collect Rune dust from it, even if you have not reached your daily limit.

Since all five wizards are in the same place for everyone, it is in your best interests to let everyone know when/where you find a wizard/high level node. Hence it is advised that you join a friends chat specifically for wizard, high level node and runesphere calls.
Each island has been numbered by players to make it easier to navigate around the Runespan.
Rewards are only available to members.
The runes you make within the Runespan will be given to the Runecrafting Guild when you leave the area. For your contribution to the guild, you will be provided with points which you can use at Wizard Fenix's shop. You will get more points for runes that are harder to find.

* These items come with perks that enhance the Wicked hood
| Item | Weight | Essence | Rune Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wicked cape | -6 kg | +25 per day | +1 per day |
| Wicked legs | -8 kg | +25 per day | +1 per day |
| Wicked robe top | -10 kg | +25 per day | +1 per day |
Note that once these items have been purchased, you will receive the perk provided regardless of whether you are wearing the item or not. A full set of Wicked items will grant you an additional daily teleport.
As you gain more and more points, you will rise higher in the Runecrafting Guild's regard and you will be able to upgrade your esteem. This is a visual change to your Wicked items that will show other players how much you have contributed.
There are 10 levels of esteem, level 1 being the most highly regarded within the Runecrafting Guild. If you buy a level of esteem but haven't purchased the levels below, these will be included in the price you pay.
You can recolour your equipped Wicked items through Wizard Finix's shop. You will not be able to re-colour items that you do not have equipped. It is recommended that you obtain the whole set before re-colouring to save points. To re-colour the full set is 2000 points.
The Massive pouch holds Rune essence allowing you to carry 18 more essence. It will disintegrate over time, however, as more essence is stored in it. You can have as many of these pouches as you like, although you are only able to have 1 active pouch at any given time. The pouch requires 90 Runecrafting to use.

* These staves can be aligned to one spell in your active spell book (a Runic staff can only be aligned to spells up to 75 Magic). You will only be able to use this spell if your active spell book is equal to the aligned spell's book (i.e. you cannot align a spell from the Lunar spell book and then change your active spell book to Ancient curses spell book and still cast the aligned spell).
Aligning a staff achieves the following:
