World Map

The world map interface
Map globe

The world map is the view of Gielinor that players have access to. In the downloadable form, players can only see the surface world. However the in-game interface and the mini-map both show dungeons - the mini-map provides an overview of all locations while the dungeon maps only show selected dungeons.

You can access the world map while playing RuneScape by clicking the 'globe' next to your minimap. For obvious reasons, you will not be able to load the world map while you are in combat.

The world map view shows a large map of the entirety of Gielinor. On the map you will see the cities and information icons for specific locations, buildings and quest starting points.

Once the world map is loaded, you can view any area of the world map by clicking and holding down the left mouse button, and then dragging the mouse. Release the mouse button to stop scrolling once the desired area comes into view. You can also use the arrow keys to move your view of the world map.

The map will automatically load with a view of your actual location, even if you are in a dungeon (with a small number of exceptions).

The World Map offers zoom base filtering, where certain icons will not show if you zoom out. Icons that are not visible at your current zoom level will appear black on the key.

Map selection
To change the map you are interested in viewing, select it from the list available here. Alternatively, the dungeon exit icon Dungeon exit can be clicked to open the map where that exit will lead to.
Side Bar Side Bar This is on the far left-hand side, click on it to open the side bar.
Map search
Search
Typing the name of a location into this box will allow you to automatically centre the map on the location you specify. You may find that several locations have similar names, though, so continue typing its name until it predicts the location you are looking for.
Map overview
Overview
Click on this to get a minimap showing the entire RuneScape world. You can quickly move your view on the world map by either clicking on a spot in the overview or clicking and moving the red square.

The red square in the overview represents the current area you are looking at in larger world view map.

Use this overview when looking for locations using the 'Key' list. When you click on an entry in the Key, yellow circles will flash in the world map. But if the location is not in the current area you are examining, you will not see the yellow circles. Using the overview allows you to see the yellow circles even when they are not in your current view.
Map zoom
Zoom
There are five zoom options – 25%, 37%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 200%. Click on the up or down arrows to magnify the world map. It will be necessary to do this when you want to get either a wider view or a more detailed view. If your mouse has a scroll-wheel, this can also be used to zoom in or out.

When you've finished looking at the map, click this button to close it.

Quick Navigation
The small map at the top of the side bar allows you to quickly focus on a particular area of the map. Simply click on it to be shown this area. The red rectangle shows the area that is currently visible on the map.

Your marker
Clicking this option will toggle the 'your marker' that appears on the map in a location that you have specified by double-clicking on the map. A red cross through the image means that the marker has been turned off, and will not appear on the map, but it will still appear on your minimap. You can right-click the marker and select 'Clear' to remove the marker completely.
Key

This allows you to toggle all icons on the map to visible or invisible.
Map categories
Map categories
The map key can be sorted into categories. These are minimised by default but can be expanded by clicking on them. You can also toggle all icons in that category to show on the map by ticking the box next to the category name. Unticking this box will hide all icons within that category.
Toggle map icon
Toggle map icon
If you want to be selective about which icons you can see, rather than turning them all off/on, you can tick the boxes next to each icon. A box that has been ticked means that the icon will show on the map, whereas an unticked box means the icon will not show.
Map key order
Key order
Clicking this option will toggle the key order between:
  • categorised - lists the key icons in groups.
  • alphabetical - lists the key icons in alphabetical order

Map Icons

It is important that whenever you enter a new town or village that you are aware what is available to you there. Looking at the minimap is a good idea of how to familiarize yourself with the buildings in that town, so it is important that you know what each of the icons on the minimap stand for

All icons have tool tips that show when you hover over the icon. Mostly these will tell you what the icon is, but some icons show more details.

Quest tool tip
Quest started tool tip

Quest icons will show the name of the quest, if it can be started, and its difficulty. If you have started or are part of the way through the quest then the icon will glow yellow and the tool tip will be updated accordingly. If you have completed the quest, the quest icon will be removed from the map.

Shortcut tool tip

Some shortcut tool tips will detail what requirements the shortcut has in order to use it.

World Map Updates

  • The current world map can be seen on the downloads page
  • The first available copy of the World Map is a sketch done by Andrew / Paul Gower as a design for Devious MUD
  • In RuneScape Classic on launch only a small portion of the map was available.
  • Later updates released the Wilderness, Crandor and Karamja
  • With the release of Members content the area to the north west of Falador was created (Taverley, White Wolf Mountain). With the addition of further members content, White Wolf Mountain became a natural blockade around which new members had to move around to get to Ardougne and the Tirannwn
  • Since RuneScape 2 large amounts of new content has been released, with the Void Islands providing Mini-Game content and Lunar Islands and the Iceberg allowing for distinct areas for quests.
  • Series continuation such as the Myreque quest series have slowly revealed more of Morytania.
  • The release of RuneScape HD allowed for the production of newer detailed overheard images of the world.
  • A more streamlined world map, that loaded much quicker than previous versions, was released on November 25th 2013.
